What Is Online Therapy?

Online therapy, or telehealth, lets you access counseling from the convenience of your home through secure video calling. At Collaborative Counseling, we provide online therapy through Zoom, a trusted, HIPAA-compliant platform. This approach allows you to meet remotely with your therapist through your computer, smartphone, or tablet, bringing our expert counseling services directly to you.

What Types of Online Therapy Do You Offer?

We offer most of our regular counseling services through online therapy, including counseling for individuals, couples, and families. Whatever challenges you are facing, our therapists can help you overcome them from the comfort of your home.

  • Individual Counseling provides a focused opportunity to help you face your fears, identify restrictive thought patterns, and create strategies to accomplish your goals.
  • Teen Counseling can help adolescents and parents navigate the emotional and relational struggles common to the teenage years.
  • Addiction Counseling is focused on helping people manage substance-related disorders and maintain sobriety from alcohol and drugs.
  • Play Therapy is an effective way to work through behavioral or emotional concerns with children by helping them express themselves in creative ways.
  • Postpartum & Perinatal Therapy can help new parents work through depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other issues while developing healthy support structures.
  • Couples and Family Therapy can help couples and families address relationship challenges, communication issues, family conflicts, and more.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is focused on treating severe and persistent emotional and behavioral issues, including self-injury, personality disorders, emotion regulation disorders, and more.

Why Should I Choose Online Therapy Services?

Collaborative Counseling's online therapy lets you access the same professional counseling experience as our in-person therapy from the convenience of your computer or phone, in addition to many other benefits:

  • Meeting from Home: Online therapy lets you attend sessions in the setting most comfortable for you. Some people find it easier to open up when speaking from home and may feel their sessions are more private this way.
  • Easier Scheduling: Online therapy makes it easier to fit therapy into your busy life, since you can meet from anywhere without worrying about commute times. Some people even meet with their therapists while on break at work.
  • Wider Range of Therapists: Online therapy lets you connect with the right therapist for your needs, regardless of where their office is located.
  • Proven Results: Research supports online therapy and has found it to be just as effective as in-person therapy for treating certain mental health conditions.

While online therapy is effective for many people, it’s important to note that it may not be for everyone. Certain mental health conditions are better treated with the resources available in our offices, while some people simply prefer in-person connections. We can help you decide what’s best for you in an initial intake session.

How Do I Meet with My Therapist?

We offer online therapy through Zoom, a HIPAA-compliant and secure platform. Upon scheduling an intake session, we will email you the link to your online therapy session, which you can access on most browsers, including Google Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. No need to download any software.

Does My Insurance Cover Online Therapy?

Yes! Most insurance plans currently allow us to bill online therapy via telehealth billing coding. For Minnesota and Wisconsin, we are in network and able to provide telehealth through the following insurance partners:

  • Aetna
  • America's PPO/Mayo
  • BCBS MN
  • Anthem BCBS of Wisconsin
  • Cigna
  • ComPsych
  • HealthPartners
  • Medica
  • MN Medicaid
  • Optum
  • Preferred One
  • Tricare
  • United Behavioral Health (UBH)/United Health Care (UHC)
  • UCare

Most EAPs also cover telehealth. In Minnesota, parity laws require insurance companies to cover online therapy the same as in-person counseling. Wisconsin state laws are not as clear, but most private insurers will cover these services. We recommend calling your insurance to verify that your plan covers telehealth.

How Do I Log in to My Appointment?

We will email you a link to access at the time of your appointment. We recommend clicking the link five minutes prior to the start of your session. You will then enter the online waiting room. Your therapist will "meet you" for your session in Zoom. Please give your therapist until five minutes after your appointment start time to arrive. If you still haven’t started your session after five minutes, please call us at 763-210-9966 for assistance.
